<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Ministry of Education, Science and Technology selects as \'Outstanding HR Fostering University Education Improvement Project’ Highest among provincial universities and procured 5th highest national treasury funding [Aug 22, 2008] Yeungnam University (President Tong Ki Woo) was selected for the \'Outstanding HR Fostering University Education Improvement Project\' starting this year and has become the highest beneficiary of national treasury funds among provincial colleges. On the 22nd the Ministry of Education, Science and Technology (Minister Ahn Byeong-man, hereinafter \'MEST\') announced their selections of universities to receive funds for the \'Outstanding HR Fostering University Education Improvement Project\' (hereinafter \'Education Improvement Project). According to the results, Yeungnam University will be funded 1.236 billion won, which is the most national treasury fund among provincial universities. It is also fifth in the nation following Yonsei University (1.439 billion won), Korea University (1.375 billion won), Hanyang University (1.327 billion won) and Kyunghee Univeristy (1.285 billion won). In order to select the universities and confirm amount of funding, MEST introduced the \'formula funding\' method for the first time to improve transparency. Formula funding is a method for providing financial support according to a pre-composed formula based on an objective and quantitative index. For this project, five indexes that reflect the education condition and performances such as employment rate, student admission rate, full time faculty rate, scholarship payment rate, education expense per student, etc. The university\'s ranking for funding was determined in the order of highest scores. The amount of funding for each college and the number of universities selected for funding were confirmed using the resource distribution formula. Bae Cheol-ho (47), director of the Yeungnam University planning office, stated that \"This means a lot because it is the result of reflecting the Ministry of Education\'s policies for selecting universities for funding based on \'educational performance\'.\" He also added, \"Yeungnam University will use the national treasury support funds for scholarships, improved education and research environments, developing various employment programs and to assist students with finding employment, while strictly administering the performance index in order to maximize the achievements of the education improvement project.\" The \'Education Improvement Project\' is in its first year and colleges selected for funding can autonomously use the national treasury funds according to their plans in order to construct educational infrastructure, scholarship grants and to enhance their educational abilities. 151 4-year universities and 127 technical colleges applied for this program, in which 64 4-year universities and 72 technical colleges for a total of 136 schools were selected for these funds. 52 schools (25 4-year and 27 technical schools) were located in the Seoul area, while 84 (39 4-year and 45 technical schools) were located in provincial areas. Amongst them 35 school (25 4-year and 10 technical schools) were national or public schools and 84 were private (39 4-year and 45 technical schools).

<BODY style=\"FONT-SIZE: 9pt; MARGIN: 5px; FONT-FAMILY: gulim; BACKGROUND-COLOR: #fff\"> Choi Min-jae and 6 others of the Design Department awarded at Contest in Greece [July 24, 2008] <A class=imageUtil id=thumb_07626462570124908 onclick=\"return hs.run(this)\" href=\"http://www.yu.ac.kr/_yboard/cheditor/show_image.php?im=2008-10-06_10-53-06_335.jpg\" target=_blank> We are now in an age that is passing \'intellectual management\' based on technology to an age of \'emotional management\' based on creativity. Thus, the value of design is becoming greater than ever before. Korean college students are being recognized for their skills in design across the world, which shows the possibility of Korean design for the future. Yeungnam University announced on the 24th that seven students in the School of Design won awards at the International Poster Contest held in Greece. Those who were honored were Choi Min-jae, Kim Hye-min, Park Hyeon-jeong, Bae Woo-ri, Yoo Seon-young, Kim Yoo-mi and Lee Min-ji, who are all sophomores in School of Design. This is the first time that they participated in an international contest, but they were all part of the 123 finalists of the 7th Poster Competition of the Island of Ithaca, Greece. The subject of the competition was \'Dream\'. 1,900 art pieces from 70 different countries across the world participated, while Choi Min-jae (photo) was selected as the \'Best 10\'. Together with the nine other best pieces, they will be exhibited in the hiking trail at Ithaca (resort island in the Ionian Sea, also known as the home of Odyssey) throughout the summer. Furthermore, they will be given free lodging at Ithaca on the weekends for one month during July. This represents that they have been recognized as the \'best\' in Europe, which is the center of global design. Moreover, only Choi and one other Malaysian were chosen as the \'Best 10\' from Asia. Last year, there were no Asians chosen as the \'Best 10\'. The 12 Distinction Awards were also given to only two Asians including Kim Yoo-mi and one other Indian. This shows how conservative the European art world is. But despite this, they showed their skills and received better-than-expected results. These young artists who dream to become designers can now have a broader perspective and greater confidence. The participants stated that they were able to be free from their preconceptions and that they realized that they were small fish in a big pond while preparing for the international competition and that they were able to have a more free and creative mindset. In addition, they all agreed that they would study harder until their designs will wow the world and that they would not stop their challenges against the world. They also did not forget to mention their appreciation to Lu Xin Jian (31, visual design), who instructed them for this competition. Thanks to the guidance of Professor Lu who majored in graphic design and pure arts, worked as a graphic designer in Canada and won many international competitions such as the world renown \'Chaumont Poster Festival in France\', students were able to acquire information related to the competition and also expand the limits of their imagination. The students said that they were able to realize how much walls of stereotypes and biases were erected and also learn the eye-level of the world. They also added that Lu took time from her busy schedule to take extra care to guide her students. Thanks to her, the new challenge was not a burden, but in fact, fun. Professor Lu stated, \"Participation in these competitions alone is a great educational opportunity. Students are able to discover their inner-self and realize what they truly want by doing their best for a concrete goal. However, they should not be stressed and compete while looking only at the results. This is because great results come only from free and fun imagination.\" Lu also added, \"The results of this competition will be a motivation for not only the winners, but other students as well, and I hope that this will be an opportunity for them to grow as representative designers for \'Design Korea\'.

Their thesis was selected as the Highlighted Paper for the SCI Journal <Biological & Pharmaceutical Bulletin> issued by the Japan Medicine Association. This paper is causing a stir because it was the first in the world to report that deoxypodophyllotoxin (DPT), which is the main ingredient of cow parsley (Anthriscus sylvestris), has an effect against inflammation, asthma and allergies. Cow parsley is a type of dropwort that can be found in Korea, Japan, China and Eastern Europe, which is also widely used for Oriental herbal medicines. In this research, which was a project supported by the central research center of MEST (The Ministry of Education, Science and Technology) starting from July 2003 to June of this year, Professor Lee Seung-ho concentrated on the isolation of deoxypodophyllotoxin (DPT) while Professor Jang Hyeon-wook worked on defining the effects of deoxypodophyllotoxin (DPT) against inflammation, asthma and allergies. In result, Lee was able to isolate 20g of deoxypodophyllotoxin (DPT) from 10kg of cow parsley, while Jang successfully revealed the effects of it through animal tests. Lee stated, \"Cow parsley has been used for alleviating fevers, discharge of the phlegm, fight against cancer and allergies. It has been empirically known that it worked on lungs and the respiratory system to remove congestions, bring down fevers and stop coughs. However, this research scientifically revealed how allergies were treated through what ingredients of cow parsley, while also revealing that it had much smaller side effects compared to existing medicines for suppressing inflammation and asthma.\" He also added, \"This basically set the foundation for making oriental medicinal herbs a science.\" Jang, who wrote over 100 theses in international journals through his research and development on medicines to treat inflammation, asthma and allergies said, \"Inflammation, asthma and allergies are the most common ailments of people today. Due to the recent environmental pollution, these symptoms are increasing and becoming more severe and thus, there is a growing need to develop preventive medicines and treatments.\" He also added, \"Based on the results of this study, I will dedicate my life in developing treatments for chronic diseases using herbal ingredients.\" On another note, the results of this research was reported on the \'Europe-US Cooperative Herbal Society\' held in Athens, Greece.

They asked for help in establishing a relief fund to help the students in the area of the earthquake. Yeungnam University immediately collected 10,000 USD and sent it to Sichuan University. Wang Meng Jiong (21, junior majoring in English), who came as an exchange student from Sichuan University in September of last year, said that he was \"Impressed not on how much that was donated, but at their attitude to help as if it was their own problem.\" He also added, \"I will never forget Yeungnam University for their help in our time of need.\" In addition, international students from China at Yeungnam University also had a fund on the 15th and 16th and collected about 4.5 million won and donated it to the Chinese Red Cross.
